ATTENTION YOUNG WORKERS!

Hello Brothers & Sisters!

This is Lisa Martin, Regional Chairperson for Region 1 and this message is regarding the importance of Young Workers within our local.

Young Workers are defined as our fellow Brothers and Sisters who are in the age category of 30 years old and under.

The Executive of Local 506 is committed to the establishment of a provincial Young Workers Committee in 2008. Many of you may have already seen the CEP Young Workers pamphlets that were distributed in the November 2006 timeframe. If not, please check your local union boards or seek out your Regional Chairperson.

At the National level of CEP an official Young Workers policy has been developed and a Young Workers Committee with representation from across Canada, established.

The opening statement of this policy reads as “The Communications, Energy and Paperworkers union of Canada is striving to change the place of Young Worker’s in society and in our union. This policy is a 1st step in a program of activity to address the Young Worker’s issues and to increase participation of Young Worker’s within CEP and the community.” For a full read of the policy please go to www.cep.ca. Once there you can go under the Policies title which will lead you to Young Workers.

Your Executive very much wants to help foster these exact ideals within Local 506. The mentoring and growth of Young Worker’s must be a priority to keep trade union activism alive and well. We want Young Worker’s to come forward and voice YOUR issues! Tell us YOUR NEEDS, YOUR VIEWS!

As we all know, we are in a bargaining year. In our collective bargaining process, the Young Worker must not be forgotten. We encourage you to provide bargaining proposals. Overwhelmingly throughout the membership, we have heard from Young Worker’s the issue of provisioning CHILD CARE or FAMILY DAYS, along with DEFINED CONTRIBUTION PENSION benefits versus the DEFINED BENEFIT PENSION.

If you are a Young Worker reading this message and you feel you may be interested in becoming part of this committee meant for YOU, please contact your local Regional Chairperson.

This is YOUR opportunity to help make a difference for your fellow Young Worker’s by having a STRONG VOICE in YOUR union!

In Solidarity,
The Executive of Local 506
